The Law Society is saddened by the loss of the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair and extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends and community. His legacy and contributions will continue to make a lasting and profound impact on Canada.
Justice Sinclair was a monumental leader, an advocate for justice, and an inspirational figure for all Canadians. He dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, Truth and Reconciliation and championing Indigenous rights. He was the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba in 1988, served as co-chair of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba, directed the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inquest and most prominently, chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where his work was pivotal in bringing to light Canada’s dark and painful history of residential schools and advancing the national conversation on reconciliation.
Justice Sinclair called on all of us in the legal profession to work together to help repair Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. The Law Society is committed to continuing the path of reconciliation he dedicated his life’s work to.
