Marcia McNeil elected in 2025 Victoria County Bencher By-Election

The January 2025 Bencher by-election results are now available and Marcia McNeil has been elected as Bencher for the County of Victoria.

For the last 35 years, Marcia has practiced exclusively in employment, labour, administrative and human rights law, representing both private and public sector employers. Following a clerkship with the BC Court of Appeal, her practice has included two years as a staff lawyer at the BC Labour Relations Board and three years with the then Public Service Employee Relations Commission (now the Public Service Agency). Marcia was the inaugural Chair of the Industry Training Appeal Board and a Vice Chair of the Community Care and Assisted Living Appeal Board.

In 2013, Marcia was retained by the BC government to conduct an independent review of the process followed by the public service in responding to allegations which resulted in the dismissal of a number of unionized and management employees in the Ministry of Health. In 2013 and 2023, Marcia was a sessional lecturer in employment law at the University of Victoria. Marcia is currently on the board of the Belfry Theatre and has previously been a director of the Victoria Hospitals Foundation Board and Canadian Heritage Arts.

Marcia has the experience to advocate strongly on behalf of lawyers through the Law Society's transition into a single legal regulator. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to upholding the principles of procedural fairness and due process, designed to protect the public interest in the administration of justice. In addition, she was involved in the recent amalgamation of the BC health colleges and brings insight into the challenges that those institutions faced as they were transitioned from independent professional oversight bodies to new entities.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Marcia McNeil to the Law Society’s governing board of Benchers.
