Journalists: Register for the 2024 Legal Issues Masterclass

On Thursday, October 3, the Law Society of BC and the Jack Webster Foundation are hosting the Legal Issues Masterclass, previously known as the Law and the Media Workshop. The masterclass offers an opportunity for journalists, journalism students and educators to refresh and enhance their knowledge of the laws around reporting and journalism. You can attend the event in person or virtually.

Navigating the courts can be complex and daunting for many journalists, especially when few working journalists today have access to a lawyer on retainer. From speaking in court and communicating with Crown counsel and defense lawyers to tackling publication bans and requesting access to documents, our esteemed panel of speakers will offer practical advice and tips while walking participants through a fictional scenario of covering a major murder trial.

Our panelists are:

  • Daniel Coles, media lawyer, Owen Bird Law Corporation
  • Rumina Daya, senior reporter, Global News
  • Scott Dawson, senior litigator, Dennis James Aitken LLP
  • Rhianna Schmunk, senior writer, CBC News
