It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leon Getz, KC, a Law Society of BC Life Bencher, long-time UBC law professor and well-respected corporate lawyer, who died peacefully at home on October 10, 2024. Throughout his remarkable 52-year career, Leon was widely known for his numerous contributions to the profession, including as a mentor and as a teacher who inspired many law students as they embarked on their careers. His intelligence, kindness, wisdom, sense of humour and dedication will be remembered by his colleagues, clients and former students.
Leon was born in South Africa and completed his LLB in the University of Cape Town in 1958. He went on to complete LLMs at the London School of Economics and Harvard University before starting his academic career as a faculty member at UBC Law in 1962. In 1979, he entered the legal profession and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1991. He served as chair of the BC Law Reform Commission and the chair of the BC Securities Commission. From 2006 to 2013, he was a Bencher at the Law Society of BC and contributed greatly to the organization. Leon’s work in educating future lawyers was recognized in 2010 when he received the Peter S. Hyndman Mentorship Award from the Vancouver Bar Association.
The Law Society wishes to share heartfelt condolences to Leon’s family – his wife Leila, daughter Sara and son Daniel, as well as to his many friends and colleagues.
