Fall consultation on proposed Code amendments to advance reconciliation

The Law Society of BC is holding a second consultation session on September 26 to gather feedback on the Federation’s Model Code Standing Committee’s proposed Code amendments, for those who missed the first session on June 26. The Code amendments are in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action 27, which states:

We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.

The proposed changes aim to establish a baseline level of knowledge and communication skills for all legal professionals. The Law Society is also consulting with the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee on this initiative and the committee’s engagement is ongoing.

Join our online consultation with Vicki George, Senior Advisor, Indigenous Engagement and Claire Marchant, Director, Policy and Practice as they provide an overview of the suggested amendments and facilitate a discussion with participants.
