All BC lawyers in private practice carry indemnification coverage through the Lawyers Indemnity Fund. This coverage provides compensation to members of the public for financial losses caused when a lawyer has been negligent and, more rarely, when a lawyer has stolen money from a client or other party.
Note that the Lawyers Indemnity Fund is distinct and completely independent from the regulatory process for addressing complaints about a lawyer’s conduct. If you believe a lawyer has acted unethically or unprofessionally, go to Complaints and Discipline for information on how to register a concern.
