The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Staff Lawyer in our Professional Regulation department. The Staff Lawyer, Professional Regulation works with the Professional Regulation Department in general and the Chief Legal Officer in particular on special projects and initiatives and as such, works closely with others within the department and the Law Society as a whole.
The Staff Lawyer is responsible for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Monitoring & Enforcement (M&E) and Alternative Processes Program (APP). The nature of the work requires a high degree of autonomy, self-direction, discretion and frequent contact with subject lawyers and other Law Society staff. The Staff Lawyer, Professional Regulation operates with the general oversight of the Chief Legal Officer.
The duties of the position include:
- Under the guidance of the Chief Legal Officer, providing direction and support in respect of the M&E program;
- Mentoring, inspecting and reviewing the work of the M&E paralegal;
- Ensuring effective and efficient processes for monitoring and enforcing compliance with disciplinary hearing panel orders, consent agreement orders, voluntary undertakings and Rule 3-5 administrative suspensions;
- Overseeing the process for Rule 3-5 administrative suspensions being issued;
- Collaborating with other Law Society departments to ensure there is effective communication and information sharing where appropriate;
- Preparing and presenting reports on the M&E work;
- Providing advice and information to staff regarding administrative penalties;
- Gathering additional information from and corresponding with lawyers subject to administrative penalties;
- Preparing the notices of administrative penalty;
- Providing information to the Chair, Discipline Committee regarding administrative penalty files where the subject lawyer disputes the amount of the penalty; and
- Such other duties as the CLO may require.
Qualifications:
- A member in good standing of the Law Society of BC or eligible for membership.
- A minimum of five years of practice experience.
- Superior judgement and analytical skills coupled with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint and document/knowledge management systems.
- Advanced legal research, writing and analytical skills.
- Some experience preferred in legal research, public policy development, or the regulation of professionals.
- Project management, policy development and legal experience are strong assets. Demonstrated ability to handle and effectively prioritize a volume of work.
The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.
The salary range for this position is $133,403.30 to $161,653.86.
