The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Manager in our Practice Standards department. The Manager, Practice Standards (“Manager”), is responsible for managing the Law Society’s Practice Standards department, and strategic projects assigned by the Director, Intake & Early Resolution & Practice Standards. The Manager is the senior counsel supervising the team members within the Practice Standards department, including a staff lawyer, external review counsel, a paralegal, and an assistant.

The duties of the position include:        

  • Acting as lead legal advisor to the Practice Standards Committee and for all legal issues related Practice Standards Review files and Practice Reviewers.
  • Assisting the Practice Standards Committee in identifying lawyers who do meet accepted standards of practise and advising on regulatory measures in accordance with the Law Society Rules
  • Monitoring trends, statistics, identifying opportunities, and implementing strategies to integrate and process Practice Standards for lawyers
  • Hiring, managing, and supervising union and non-union staff, contracting outside counsel, and other professionals for the Practice Standards program, 
  • Overseeing and managing Practice Reviews and investigations of practises in accordance with Law Society Rules;
  • Assisting with preparing and managing the budget for the Practice Standards department.
  • Managing relationships with other Law Society departments to ensure common files are coordinated, new programs are supported and operations are developed and run collaboratively.
  • Providing support to the Director in regards to Early Resolution matters and files conducted by External Counsel.
  • Performing other duties that the Director, Intake & Early Resolution & Practice Standard assigns.

Qualifications

  • A member in good standing in the Law Society of BC or eligible for membership
  • Minimum of 10 years of combined private practice and management experience
  • Significant senior regulatory and administrative law experience
  • Senior advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal, technological, organizational, legal research and verbal and written communication skills
  • Senior experience working with and advising committees, task forces and/or working groups. Requires significant knowledge of Law Society Rules, professional ethics, professional competence models, project management, department management and evaluation.

The salary range for this position is $168,010 to $182,620.
