The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Intake Officer in our Intake & Early Resolutions department. The Intake Officer is part of a team responsible for the intake and handling of all telephone and written enquiries and complaints. The Intake Officer is also responsible for seeking substantiation of complaints and, for some matters, completing the assessment of the complaint.

The duties of the position include:              

  • Handling of public telephone enquiries including communicating the role of the Law Society, the complaints process and alternative sources of assistance and information. Where appropriate, providing advice on whether there are professional conduct or competency issues for the Law Society to review;
  • Acknowledging receipt of new complaints and opening, classifying, and prioritizing them;
  • Reviewing and assessing new complaints to determine if there are professional conduct and/or competency issues;
  • Requesting and obtaining substantiation from complainants when necessary;
  • Resolving complaints by telephone as appropriate, liaising with other departments as required, and advising complainants and members on the complaints process and on the progress and outcome of complaints;
  • Assessing and processing applications under the Law Society Fee Mediation process;
  • Preparing assessment letters to close complaints if unsubstantiated, outside Law Society jurisdiction or don’t allege a discipline violation; and
  • Such other duties as the Director, Intake & Early Resolution and Practice Standards may require.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Paralegal program plus a minimum of three to five years in a law office or other law-related work.
  • Conflict resolution and Trauma-informed training.  
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, judgement, and analytical skills.
  • Superior writing skills.

The salary range for this position is $84,422 to $91,763.
