Claims Counsel

The Lawyers Indemnity Fund has an opening for the position of Claims Counsel.

The responsibilities of this position include:
  • Investigating professional negligence and theft claims against lawyers
  • Determining the applicability of indemnity coverage
  • Acting as defence counsel and managing the defence of actions by outside counsel
  • Developing and implementing strategies to effectively resolve claims and negotiating settlements
  • Participating in loss prevention activities and providing information to covered lawyers on practice and risk issues
Qualifications
  • You must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of BC with a minimum of five years of recent litigation experience. An excellent reputation in the legal community is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience defending professional liability claims, recent BC Supreme Court trial experience, or working as in-house defense counsel for an insurer.
  • You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical abilities, superior advocacy and sound judgment. You take a practical approach to issues. You also have superior writing skills and work effectively in stressful situations. 
The Lawyers Indemnity Fund is owned and operated by the Law Society of BC and provides indemnification to all lawyers in private practice in British Columbia and some in-house lawyers at their option. It has over $190 million in assets, an annual budget of $22 million and manages over 1,000 reports of claims and potential claims against lawyers each year.

The terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between the Law Society and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position. The salary range for this position is $133,403.30 to $161,653.86.

The start date of the position will be in September 2024.
