The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Manager in our Finance department. This position is responsible for the planning and implementation of new accounting and reporting systems, ongoing optimization of all Finance department systems, super user and key player in providing support to Finance Team and intra department stakeholders in the progression of related project and system work. This position must be fluent in report writing within the financial reporting system, navigating through various financial systems used in Finance and be the departmental IT expert.
This position is also responsible for overseeing the preparation of financial statements including variance analysis, financial reporting, maintenance of the general ledgers and review of account reconciliations. This position is a key contributor to the annual audit and the annual operating and capital budgets and is also responsible for the direct supervision and proper operations and reporting of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions of the finance department.
The duties of the position include:
- Manage implementation of accounting and reporting system upgrades including any work relating to the integration of internal member and billing systems (LSIS)
- Manage and co-ordinate the bi-annual accounting system updates including co-ordination within Finance and other departments and related UAT before launch to Production
- Plan and implement new systems and review and coordination changes to the internal member/billing system (LSIS) integration
- Act as a liaison with IT personnel and external consultants to update or resolve accounting system issues, when required
- Work with the Finance team to compile the reports needed for financial and Bencher reporting
- Review and approve work completed by the Accounts Receivable Specialist (invoices, debit memos, credit memos, ADFA entries)
- Review and approve work completed by the Accounts Payable Specialist (invoices, payments, EFT)
- Review and approve work completed by the Finance Team (journal entries, new GL and dept requests, municipal, provincial and federal tax returns)
- Work with the Finance team to complete requirements for annual external audit including draft audited financial statements, analysis of new accounting pronouncements and policy changes under Canadian GAAP and incorporating them into the financial statements, co-ordination of the information gathering requests and subsequent deployment to auditors and working with the auditors to resolve inquiries
- Work with the Director, Finance to manage the annual operating and capital budgets process, including analysis, recommendations and reporting to the Benchers and Finance and Audit Committee
- Work with the Director, Finance to develop, implement and monitor the Society’s accounting policies and procedures, including internal control procedures
- Identify process improvements within Finance and work with Finance team in its implementation
- Write and maintain reports within the financial reporting module (Vena)
- Provide support and guidance to team members in their completion of duties where required
- Perform backup duties for the Senior Accountant as required
- Perform backup duties for the Director, Finance as required
- Such other duties as the Director, Finance may require including frequent ad hoc tasks, projects and analysis
- Other backup duties of the position include maintaining the general ledger and financial statements including review and approval of journal entries prepared by the accounting team, including the Accounts Receivable and Payable Specialists, the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Accountant and Payroll and Benefits Specialist
Qualifications
- Professional accounting designation (CPA).
- Minimum of ten years of accounting experience at a senior level, and managerial experience.
- Experience with computerized accounting systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook and Word).
- Experience leading accounting system implementations.
- Other qualities include:

- Exceptional inter-personal skills and attention to detail.
The salary range for this position is $109,866 to $119,420.
