The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time, Counsel in our Discipline department. The Discipline Counsel is responsible for the effective prosecution of citations at hearings before discipline panels and review boards and for occasional representation of the Law Society as required in other proceedings, including appearances before the Supreme Court of BC or the Court of Appeal. Discipline Counsel also provides advice and assistance to Benchers and staff on discipline and related policy matters.

The duties of the position include:        

  • Preparation and prosecution of citations authorized by the Discipline Committee, including all hearing preparation and advice related to consent resolutions of citations.
  • Representation of the Law Society in reviews of disciplinary decisions.
  • Working with and advising Professional Conduct lawyers and others in the effective investigation of possible discipline violations.
  • Representation of the Law Society in interim proceedings related to extraordinary action.
  • Advising regulatory committees on matters relating to discipline.
  • Occasional representation of the Law Society in court proceedings related to the investigation and discipline processes.
  • Such other duties as the Director, Discipline and External Litigation or Chief Legal Officer may require.

Qualifications

  • Practicing membership in the Law Society of B.C. or eligibility for membership. 
  • A minimum of seven years of recent litigation experience including extensive knowledge of evidence and administrative law. 
  • Superior writing and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Ability to meet changing deadlines and work in highly stressful situations. 

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position. 

The salary range for this position is $149,097.80 to $173,423.62.
