Deputy Director, PLTC (18-Month Term)

Our Professional Development department is seeking a temporary, full-time Deputy Director, Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC) for an 18-month term starting May 5th and ending in December 2026. Reporting to the Director of Professional Development, the Deputy Director is responsible for managing PLTC, a 10-week course for licensing candidates conducted remotely using virtual classrooms and held three times a year in the Spring (February start), Summer (May start), and Fall (September start). The Deputy Director, PLTC leads program administration, legal content and curriculum, and instruction. 

The duties of this position include:
  • Leading the day-to-day administration and delivery of PLTC, which includes: (a) direction to the Senior Coordinator and other program staff; (b) support for the Publications staff with respect developing and updating practice materials, curriculum and assessments; and (c) support for Faculty and contract instructors preparing for and executing the PLTC program. 
  • Implementing policies and processes to ensure: (a) high-quality instruction; and (b) consistent, fair grading standards. 
  • Managing student issues relating to registration, accommodation requests, standing (including failures), feedback, and reviews.   
  • Investigating the unethical conduct of students for referral to the Credentials & Licensing Department.
  • Formally and informally evaluating the quality of PLTC materials, classroom learning, assessments, and support for Indigenous and remedial students. 
  • Hiring, onboarding and directly supervising Program, Publications and Faculty team members, including performance feedback and annual performance reviews.
  • Recruiting and overseeing the training of contract instructors, subs, and assessment actors.
  • Providing input on and managing the annual PLTC budget.
  • Such other duties as the Director, Professional Development may require.
Qualifications:
  • An LL.B or JD and a minimum of five years of relevant and current practice experience.
  • Management experience, ideally in a legal or academic setting.
  • Superior interpersonal and oral communication skills. With a record of working collaboratively.
  • Experience teaching and assessing legal knowledge and skills an asset. 
  • Experience with/knowledge of one or more of editing and publishing, online education, learning management, and educational technology an asset.

The salary range for this position is $173,051 to $179,000. We also offer an excellent benefits package that includes extended health benefits, a dental plan and more. 

This position is based at the Law Society of British Columbia office at 845 Cambie Street in the Yaletown area of Vancouver. The Law Society follows a hybrid work structure where employees are required to work a combination of remote and in-office days based on the task and department operational requirements. We value a healthy work-life balance and currently offer a 35-hour work week with a hybrid schedule of three days on-site and two days remote. This hybrid work arrangement may be modified depending on your availability and interest in working on-site.
