The Law Society of BC is seeking a permanent, full-time Assistant in our Discipline department.  The Assistant, Discipline is a legal assistant position and is responsible for providing litigation support to one or more Discipline Counsel and litigation. The position requires an understanding of the Law Society Rules governing the citation hearing process as well as the Court of Appeal rules relevant to appeals of discipline decisions.

The duties of this position include:
  • Providing litigation support to discipline counsel, on citation and teamed investigation files.
  • Providing administrative support to counsel on non-discipline file related work such as policy work, projects and presentations.
  • Scheduling meetings and witness interviews, arranging witness travel and accommodation, ordering transcripts, managing hearing and BF calendars, conducting online searches and similar tasks.
  • Organizing and maintaining discipline hearing files and organizing and photocopying documentation on citation and teamed investigation files.
  • Word processing and transcription of letters, memos to file and legal documents, including court documents, and generating court pleadings.
  • Preparing hearing materials, including affidavits, agreed statements of fact, notices to admit, books of documents, professional conduct records and books of authority.
  • Supporting and assisting paralegals in the preparation of disclosure and other tasks, including collecting, photocopying and organizing disclosure documents and on occasion preparing document indices.
  • Proofreading and formatting written materials.
  • Preparing accounting and cost-tracking documents, including bills of costs and cheque requisitions and processing witness expenses.
  • Ordering discipline department related office supplies for hearing use.
  • Such other duties as the Director may require.
Qualifications
  • Legal secretarial training and a minimum of three years of office experience in a litigation setting. 
  • Excellent word processing skills (advanced Microsoft Word training).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel preferred. 
  • Ability to work co-operatively in a sometimes stressful environment with competing demands and tight deadlines, and to effectively prioritize work. 
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail is required. 
  • Familiarity with Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Rules and Forms.
The salary range for this position is $64,713 to $70,340.
